Ubuntu Edge receives price cut as cut-off date looms

The Ubuntu Edge may have a harder battle to fight than Canonical thought, with another round of price cuts being instigated as the cut off date looms.

Canonical had hoped that the Ubuntu OS-touting smartphone would be able to raise the $32 million it required to develop the device.

Unfortunately with just 13 days left to go the company has only managed to rustle together $9 million of its target. To reach its goal would require backers to pledge around $1.7 million each day — which isn’t impossible, as the company managed to raise $2 million in the first 8 hours of the campaign.

The latest price cut brings the phone down to just $695, which is much lower than the original $775 cost. If you had already made the plunge and spent $775, don’t worry as you will be getting refunded the difference.

As the end of the campaign looms, it’s looking extremely likely that Canonical will not reach its goal, and be forced to refund all the money. If it does reach the colossal goal it has set itself then you should expect your Ubuntu Edge to ship to you from May 2014.
