The HTC One didn’t quite push HTC back into the green, but Sony Mobile has had better luck after the Xperia Z managed to grow profits to $60 million after a $28 million loss this time last year.
Sony Mobile’s total device sales also saw significant growth, managing to shift 9.6 million handsets as opposed to the 7.4 million last year.
The Xperia Z has been well reviewed and has reportedly experienced strong sales, so it’s likely that it was the main reason behind Sony’s success.
The company is hoping that the Z’s successor, the Xperia Z Ultra, can continue that momentum — but with it set to cost £600, it’s certainly pricier than most phones on the market.
It should be a good launch for Sony though, with the 6.4-inch device going on sale in mid-September — just in time for Christmas.
