An anonymous source has claimed that Samsung is getting ready to launch its much rumoured smartwatch, the Galaxy Gear, just two days before the high profile IFA electronics show in Berlin.
The report from Bloomberg says that the device will run on the Android operating system and that Samsung insiders believe that Apple are planning to launch a similar device later this year which the Galaxy Gear aims to compete with. The source also claimed that the device will not feature a bendable screen, though the same source also said that this is a technology that Samsung are still developing.
The report goes on to claim that the Galaxy Gear will launch on the same day as the Samsung Galaxy Note III, Samsung’s upcoming phablet and successor to the Galaxy Note II.
Wearable technology could well be the next step for manufacturers as the high-end smartphone market reaches saturation. While developing markets are sustaining companies like Apple and Samsung with high sales of lower spec devices it’s getting tougher to shift units in developed countries. Whether it will be wrist mounted devices or head mounted technology like Google Glass that achieve mainstream success may be the next big question.
