Huawei and Rangers FC have struck a deal for the telecoms producer to provide Wi-Fi made available to the 50,000 strong Ibrox crowd.

With phased roll out due to begin next month the network will give fans, as well as those in the approaches, concourse, restaurants and corporate areas, full online access. Users will also be able to connect to club competitions, merchandising, team talk discussions and upcoming events.

With fans having reported poor access to 3G mobile coverage Rangers FC felt that providing Wi-Fi coverage would enhance fans ability to connect digitally during live games. Rangers cheif exec Craig Mather said “More and more people are using smart devices as a primary means of communication and we look forward to revolutionising the way in which Rangers fans can engage with the club.”

Huawei told What Mobile that they are unable to comment on any plans or negotiations to pursue similar projects at other venues in the UK but have stated that they believe contracts to provide wifi to these locations to be  growing market.
