PSN price debacle – costs adjusted, Sony to refund differences

A few days ago Sony revealed the prices for digital versions of PS4 games that can be downloaded on the PlayStation Network (PSN) in the UK. The prices were met understandably met with anger when it was revealed that some third party publishers were charging more for games on Sony’s system than they were on Xbox One.

Of particular note was EA, who charged £63 for its games, a full £13 more than what can be seen on Xbox One. The company’s response to backlash was to cut a measly £3 off of the price, but now it’s gone all out and adjusted it to the same price as the Xbox One version – £54.99. The same goes for all other EA and Ubisoft titles.

Speaking to Eurogamer, Sony stated: “Although PS4 launches in Europe on the 29th November, we have switched on the European PSN early to test and make sure that features and functionality are fully operational for launch.

“However, as PS4 and PSN have not yet officially launched in this region, nothing on the PSN is final, including pricing on the store. You will continue to see some prices adjusted over the next few days in preparation for launch on Friday.”

It’s good to see the prices back to what they should have been in the first place, but the digital pricing is still a fair amount above what you might expect to pay at retail.

With pricing now in publisher’s hands and not the retailer’s, let’s hope this generation doesn’t lead to a hike in game costs on PSN.
