China’s meteoric rise through the tech world looks set to gain another boost as Huawei has announced its new Kirin 920 octa-core processor.
Designed to rival Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 805, the Kirin 920 features four Cortex-A15 clocked between 1.7GHz and 2.0GHz, combined with four Courtex-A7 cores clocked between 1.3GHz and 1.6GHz. The GPU is a Mali-T628, which is said to be capable of producing graphics twice as nice as its predecessor. More importantly it also supports 2560 x 1600 pixel resolution – better known as quad-HD 4K definition (presumably we’ll be seeing some QHD Huawei handsets in the not-too-distant future now, too).
Currently, Qualcomm all but dominates the mobile processor market, with its Snapdragon line of chipsets nearly ubiquitous. It’s not without good reason, either, as it makes some mighty polished pieces of hardware. As such, almost any Android device you could care to name runs one of its processors, whilst iOS devices use Apple’s own brand of chips and the occasional Windows Phone opts for Intel. With this announcement, though, that monopoly could be about to change.
