Gorilla Glass 5 promises more gorilla

Gorilla Glass 5 has been announced by Corning, it will feature in devices this year and promises to be even more resilient to save a you a lot of tears.

We get the same press release from Corning every year with promises of resistance to shattering, cracking, fracturing, chipping etc. This year’s iteration of the smartphone world’s favourite screen tech sounds off the same promises.

However with Gorilla Glass 5 we could be seeing less device going in for screen repairs. The standout feature this year is improvements to impact damage (e.g. drops on the floor).

Corning explained during its own tests, Gorilla Glass 5 survived up to 80 percent of the time, when dropped face down from 1.6 metres in the air. Apparently out performing the competition.

Gorilla Glass 5 vs Gorilla Glass 4 please?

But Corning didn’t disclose how good GG5 is compared to its predecessor Gorilla Glass 4, which is used in this year’s super popular Samsung Galaxy S7. Details on how GG5 was constructed hasn’t been disclosed either so the same question will always reoccur.

How is it better than last time?

Corning’s glass technology has been implemented on approximately 4.5 billion devices worldwide. On 1,800 models across 40 major brands.

No manufacturer has been confirmed to be using the new screen technology yet, but you can bet there will be a queue.
