Pre-orders opened this morning, with EE and Carphone Warehouse both stocking the Sony Xperia XZ Premium from June 2.
The latest Sony Xperia XZ Premium flagship is today available to pre-order at either EE and Carphone Warehouse. Design remains the same with a familiar slab appearance comprised entirely of glass. If you’ve used Xperia devices in the past, you’ll feel at home with the design. The handset sports a world first a 5.5-inch, 4K display, an ultraHD standard usually reserved for all but the most expensive televisions. The panel is also one of the first devices to support HDR, a technology used to improve contrast and colour depth.
Powering the smartphone is a 2.45GHz Snapdragon 835 processor and 4GB of RAM. The chipset is currently the most powerful available and also supports the latest CAT16 cellular speeds. This technology has theoretical download speeds of up to 1Gbps, which is substantially more than you’re typical broadband provider. It also packs a large 3,230mAh battery with Quick Charging 3.0 via USB type-C and a side mounted fingerprint sensor, which is now a staple of the Sony Xperia line. Android 7 Nougat will run straight from the box with no update needed.
The rear camera is 19 megapixels and uses Sony’s Motion Eye technology for super slow motion video. There’s also Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) and an LED flash, the former of which is a first for the flagship. The lack of OIS has always been a complaint of the Xperia flagships, so this is a welcome addition which should really help. Accompanying this is a much higher resolution 13 megapixel front camera with f/2.0 aperture.
EE is on offer for £52.99 per month with 25GB of data, unlimited calls and text, with £9.99 upfront. On this plan customers can use the tariff in Europe plus five extra destinations and receive Wi-Fi and 4G calling. Vodafone has confirmed to stock the smartphone with pre-orders yet to open. Carphone is offering the handset prepaid for £649.99, its recommended deal on Vodafone is £40 per month with 16GB of data, unlimited calls and text, with £69.99 upfront. Colour options include: luminous chrome and deepsea black on the glass body. Bronze pink (pictured) will be available later in June.
