WATCH: Archos CEO doesn’t know that their new phone isn’t waterproof, learns the hard way

Much has been made of waterproofing smartphones lately, for some reason. Devices like the Sony Xperia Z2  are completely submersible, retaining full function whilst underwater. Useful for putting an end to the crushing paranoia experienced whilst walking along the side of the pool with a phone in your pocket, if nothing else.

Many other devices claim to be ‘waterproof’, but in reality they’re more splash-proof than anything else. There’s a scale to grading this sort of thing, known as the IP Standard. With most electronics, its rarely as black-and-white as ‘completely submersible’ and ‘will literally dissolve like the Wicked Witch of the West’.

You’d think that the CEO of French manufacturer Archos would have known this. Unfortunately for him, he didn’t.

Whilst showing off their latest smartphone, the Quechua 5″, CEO Loic Poirier was determined to demonstrate how durable it was. Drop it on the ground? No problem – Poirier picks the device up to show it is unscathed, looking disproportionately smug. How about drowning it in water? Poirier fills up a jug from the tap with the phone already inside it, and…well…you can probably guess what follows.

Check out the video above.
