Vine introduces direct messaging of both text and video

Vine, the six-second video service, has launched a new feature allowing users to to message one another. Both video and, for the first time, text can be sent. What’s more, Vine videos can also be sent to anyone in your personal address book – regardless of whether or not they use the service.

Instead of now just unleashing your Vines upon the world indiscriminately, you can now send them to just select individuals or via group message. You can also alter settings to prevent certain users from directly messaging you.

“From Vine’s early days, we recognized that there was a growing desire and need for private messaging on Vine,” says Vine Product Manager Jason Toff,  “We’ve watched the community come up with some clever ways to send videos to their friends as we’ve been working on this solution.”

Hopefully your chats will be a little more interesting than comically bad mock-up Vine has released, which we’ve used as the image for this article.
