VOD service Crackle now available on PS Vita – totally free, no sign-up required

Those longing for a more rounded and fleshed-out media experience on their PS Vita may finally have what they’re looking for.

VOD service Crackle is now available. What’s more, not only is there no subscription or payment required, but you don’t even need to sign up! It’s 100% no strings attached.

Crackle claims to be aimed at ‘the guy’. Just who that guy is is unclear, but apparently he’s one who is in to ‘guys’ favourite genres’, like Action, Sci-Fi, Horror, Comedy, Crime and, er, Anime.

A bit of a weird angle for something as open as VOD, and for any lady Vita owners out there (yes Crackle, they exist) I’m sure you can get just as much enjoyment out of the service too.

Don’t let that put you off though – there really is a cracking range of watchables on offer. Crackle manages to serve up an array of lesser-known cult-classics, without delving into the farthest reaches of indie obscuria. You may not have watched Loose Cannons before, but it’s got Dan Aykroyd and Gene Hackman in it! Or how about Punchline? Us neither, but it stars Tom Hanks and Sally Field, so it’s pretty safe to say it won’t be a waste of your time.

It’s a great formula for Crackle, and it certainly makes it a more than viable alternative in the absence of a really killer Netflix or Lovefilm app. A similar approach is taken with their excellent offering of TV shows. No, you won’t find The Wire or It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia here, but you can watch a young Jeremy Renner in The Unusuals. Or cartoon icon Dilbert, or even the original Three Stooges.

For an app that is entirely free, both of payment and obligation, you’d be a fool not to pick it up. Even if you don’t have a Vita, it’s available on just about every piece of technology under the sun – Xbox One, Roku, Kindle Fire, Apple TV, your LG Smart Fridge, the Hubble Telescope (maybe not the last two, but you can check out the full list here).

Crackle is available in the US, Canada, the UK and Australia – although some content is restricted outside of the US. See all that’s available for your visual delectation here, and then go and download it immediately.
