The first time you switch on your phone, these are the settings you’ll need to complete in order to get going.

First off, you can select the language you wish to be used in all the phone menus. If you are visually impaired or hard of hearing, tap Accessibility and change the settings accordingly. Then hit Next.

Some of the set-up process requires hooking up to a Wi-Fi network. Tap the name and enter the password to connect to your chosen service. If you would prefer to do this at a later stage, click Next.

The easiest way to set the date and time is by tapping the box for the Automatic option, which is provided by your network. Alternatively you can set the time and date manually.

Users with a Samsung account can sign in here, or you can create a new account. It’s needed to use many Samsung features and you will need a Wi-Fi connection. If you would prefer to do this later, hit Skip.

Google users with a Gmail or Plus account can sign in at this stage by providing an email address and password. You can also back-up your phone data or restore saved data from your Google account.

In order to use the advanced GPS features on the S4, you will need to give permission for the apps to send details of your location to Google’s servers. You can turn this off at any time.

For peace of mind it’s a good idea to back up your phone’s multimedia content (pictures and videos) to a Dropbox account; it will be stored safely online and can be accessed from any linked computer. See set-up guide p31.

If you have the time, here you can learn about some fancy functions on the S4. You can turn each function on or off by moving the green slider right or left (all this can be done at a later stage too).

The final stage in the set-up process is naming your device; this is the title other devices will see when you connect to them. That’s it, you’re all set!
