Samsung might be developing an entirely new camera sensor that features a lower megapixel count versus the current Galaxy S6.
Another day, another Samsung Galaxy S7 rumour. This time, the proposed news is that the company will actually lower the megapixel count in the upcoming smarpthone to 12, in an effort to improve overall picture quality. According to a tipster over on Weibo, the sensor will also get an increase to 1/2.0″, while the camera will also incorporate a new dual-photodiode technology (essentially two sensors) to further improve performance.
This is a very opposing rumour when compared to yesterday, when Samsung was said to be considering a Sony sensor instead of their usual in-house hardware. As we know, megapixel counts are not the be-all end-all in smartphone photography, with many devices (including the Z5) employing oversampling as a way to condense the resolution and improve quality.
It will be interesting to see which way Samsung decides to go with this. Who knows, perhaps Sony and Samsung are quietly working on a custom sensor together?
