Samsung Galaxy Round is finally official

Okay, whew, we can finally stop talking about Samsung Galaxy Round rumours. That’s because the Samsung Galaxy Round is finally official.

The Korean company has at last revealed its first ever curved smartphone, albeit only for its home turf at the moment. It’s a 5.7 inch device that the company claims will fit perfectly in user’s hands. The screen itself is a s Super AMOLED running at 1080p. It’s concave, and looks quite different to the prototypes we’d seen before it. The case is 7.9 mm thick, while the weight is at 154 grams. It’s insides include a 2.3GHz quad-core processor, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage memory. Camera needs are suited well, with a 13 MP rear-facing camera and a 2 MP front-facing one. All of this high-end excellence is powered by a 2,800 mAh battery.

But that’s the standard stuff. We know the phone’s innards are in good hands, but what’s so great about the Samsung Galaxy Round’s, well, roundness?

A few unique features compliment the design. The first rather nifty trick is something called the Roll Effect. Basically, if you have your phone locked and sitting on a surface, you can push down on one side of the phone to tilt it into view. The phone will trace this and then show you the lock screen complete with the time and notifications. There’s also a Gravity Effect that helps you interact with the screen while it’s tilted. We don’t have any word on if this screen uses the plastic covering that we’d heard about before.

Right now the Samsung Galaxy Round is only available in Korea on October 10th (tomorrow). The price is at 1.09 million won, which rounds out to roughly £629. Around the same price as the Note 3, then. It comes in Luxury Brown, although more colours are to be announced. We’re hoping that announcements of new handsets are imminent, as this is a pretty cool new design.

Don’t forget that LG’s own curved handset offering will be announced and (hopefully) released next month.
