Qualcomm has announced two new additions to its budget range of smartphone processors, which offer a small bump in power compared to their predecessors.

The Snapdragon 412 and 212 serve as updates to the existing 410 and 210. Both of these chips are now over a year old, so it’s a welcome refresh. The new versions don’t add anything new in terms of functionality, rather, they just bump up the clock and memory speeds a little bit. They are both built on the same 28nm manufacturing process and feature the same CPU’s as before.

Featuring the same Cortex-A53 architecture and Adreno 306 graphics processor, it’s exactly the same internals as before. 64-bit functionality future-proofs the chip somewhat by allowing it to utilise more memory versus 32-bit processors, though it’s unlikely you’ll ever see a Snapdragon 412 paired with over 4GB’s of RAM. The clock speed is up from 1.2GHz to 1.4GHz which should help it to be marginally quicker and it supports screens up to 1080p FullHD resolution. Camera’s are also well catered for, with support for up to a 13 megapixel sensor and FullHD video recording.

Replacing the Snapdragon 210, this new processor now feels much closer to the more powerful 400. While it still can’t match the processor speeds of the 400, it does now feature a more powerful Adreno 304 graphics processor versus its predecessor. It supports standard HD 720p screens and up to 1080p video recording. Cameras up to 8 megapixels are supported and the processor speed has been bumped from 1.1GHz to 1.3GHz.
