Moto X 2016 edition to come in two variants

Rumoured Moto X 2016 edition has appeared on Chinese certification website TENAA, sporting an all-metal finish and mid-range hardware.

The mysterious device, currently code-named “XT1662”, recently showed up on the China Compulsory Certificate (CCC) website and GFXBench. This revealed key specifications including a MediaTek MT6755 (Helio P10) CPU and 3GB RAM, plus a 3,000mAh battery. Today, the leaks from TENAA seem to confirm this, with the same hardware listed as in the CCC leak. We’ve also got some imagery to go with it, which shows an all-metal body that looks somewhat similar to the old HTC One series.

Moto X 2016 edition rumours are stacking up

It’s finished off in gold with a round fingerprint sensor at the back, below the camera sensor. Comparing this with the other Moto X rumours we’ve seen recently, it makes us wonder if this is in fact a variant that’s exclusive to China. A GFXBench leak for another model, dubbed “XT1650” showed a Snapdragon 820 and 4GB RAM, which seems more normal given that the X range has always been designed to compete with flagships. The hardware in the TENAA and CCC variant screams mid-range. Screen sizes are also radically different, with the Chinese model having a 4.6-inch 1080p panel versus a 5.5-inch 1440p display.

Two variants: mid-range and flagship?

With the Chinese market still favoring smaller form factors over the large hulking phablet devices here in the west, there’s every possibility of a dual launch. The recent swarm of leaks suggest that the device will probably get unveiled at IFA in Berlin later this week. With Lenovo now at the helm, the company could be looking to capitalise on both the western and Chinese markets with targeted models. Either way, we’ll know more very soon.
