British passengers travelling on the Eurotunnel will be able to make mobile phone calls and surf the Internet from today ‘ almost two years after French connectivity was installed.

The service, launched in partnership with Vodafone, EE, O2 and equipment supplier Alcatel-Luncent, has been introduced to mark 20 years since the first cross-channel journey via the tunnel.

Passengers on the North Tunnel which ferries customers from Britain to France will have access to 2G and 3G services.

It follows a similar scheme by French operators, which added the connectivity to the South Tunnel, in time for the London Olympics in July 2012.

Services on the Vodafone and EE networks are now live with O2 to be added shortly.
