McDonald’s giving out Step-it activity tracker with Happy Meals

McDonald’s US and Canada is giving out a Step-it activity tracker with every happy meal they sell, in an attempt to capitalise on the 2016 Olympics.

The fast food giant has announced that they plan to ship a Step It! activity tracker with every McDonalds Happy Meal sold in the US and Canada. They also released this rather cringe-worthy YouTube video to back it up, which shows two children battling to achieve the highest step count.

The Step-it activity tracker is fairly basic in implementation, with a three light system to indicate how active your child is, plus a step counter on some models. The wearable has been designed by Creata, a global marketing and promotions agency which seems to have quite a bit of experience in toy design.

McDonald’s has long been the subject of criticism for their Happy Meal toys, with many saying that they act as a ploy to get children buying more fast food. There’s no denying that it’s probably true, but their recent change of heart perhaps suggests that the company is once again attempting to update their image for a more healthy one.

McDonald’s say that the toy will be limited edition and only available during the next four weeks. As one of the main 2016 Olympic sponsors, it makes sense that the company would want to try and integrate the athletic image into their products for a one-off promotion.
