Kazam is making the world’s slimmest smartphone, and it’s coming to Europe too

It seems that when it comes to really pushing the physical limits of the smartphone you may want to look slightly further abreast of the usual big names like Samsung and Sony. Recently we’ve seen the release of the Gionee Elife 5.5 – currently the world’s slimmest smartphone this was an Indian brand offering a limited Asian release, much to our dismay.

Now though, something is launching much closer to home.

British manufacturer Kazam has unveiled the Kazam Tornado 348, which at just 5.15mm in depth is set to become the world’s thinnest smartphone. Considering current record holder, the aforementioned Elife 5.5, is 5.5mm thick, that’s some improvement.

What’s more, it doesn’t look like Kazam has had to compromise on specs too much to accommodate such a slim chassis. The Tornado 348 packs a MediaTek True Octa-core MT6592 processor (it’s a little hard to pin down but you can expect speeds of around 1.7GHz) with 1GB of RAM. There’s also an 8MP rear-facing camera, a 5MP selfie-cam and a 2,050 mAh battery.

Perhaps the most impressive specification is the screen size, though. It measures 4.7 inches diagonal, which is considered pretty small for Android devices these days. This means that the Tornado 348, as well as being slim, is rather compact too. It’s a 720p resolution behind it and is made of Gorilla Glass, too.

To help you better visualise, with measurements of 139.8 x 67.5 mm it’s almost identical to the iPhone 6 (138.1 mm x 67.0 mm), but more than 25% slimmer.

There are a couple of downsides, though – it neither supports microSD card expansion, nor 4G LTE. Still, if you’re all about aesthetics then hopefully that won’t bother you too much.

It’ll be available in both black and white variants when it rolls out across Europe later this November for £249.
