Can’t get no satisfaction: iPhone 5 loses top spot

The iPhone 5 has ranked second to the HTC One X in a survey of UK mobile users’ device satisfaction.

But it doesn’t appear to be pushing many buttons with United States mobile users, coming in at fifth.

In a study by One Device Research of 52,140 United Kingdom mobile users from July 2012 to January 2013, via a mobile online survey which automatically identified the user’s device, the iPhone ranked second in user satisfaction, with the HTC One X scoring the highest at 8.47 on a scale of 1 to 10.

The Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and Samsung Galaxy S3 Mini came in at third tied most satisfactory device with a rating of 8.18, followed by the Samsung Galaxy S3 a surprising last with 8.09 (the S3 won What Mobile’s Readers’ Choice award for 2012).

iPhone number five in the US

In a study of 93825 US mobile users’ over the same period, the iPhone 5 ranked fifth in individual device satisfaction at 8.23, behind the four Android devices.

The top device for user satisfaction in the US was the Motorola Atrix HD at 8.57, followed by the Droid Razr M at 8.5, the HTC Rezound 4G at 8.32 and the Galaxy Note 2 at 8.26.

Apple did however top mobile device satisfaction on an aggregated level at 7.72, followed by Google at 7.68, then Motorola at 7.49, then HTC and Nokia at 7.40.

On Device Research said the top five devices for user satisfaction were 4G capable and those with a 4G subscription reported a higher device satisfaction than those who did not have access to 4G (7.76 versus 7.28).

This also affected mobile network operator satisfaction by 0.48, the report showed, with those with a 4G subscription reporting a rating of 7.15 versus those who didn’t at 6.67.

On Device Research marketing manager Sarah Quinn said the 4G impact on device and thus network operator satisfaction was an opportunity for operators, since it would also have an effect on revenue and loyalty.

“As 4G opens up to more UK cities in 2013, it will provide opportunities for both mobile network operators and handset manufacturers to increase user satisfaction and device usage.”
