Instagram are celebrating a massive social media milestone, proudly announcing a record 500 million registered users, 300 million of which are active users.

It just goes to show that photography transcends traditional conversation. No matter where you’re from you can appreciate a radiant picture, an insight into another world and expressions of joy. That’s what Instagram offers and today the Facebook owned company announces a major milestone reached, thanks to more overseas users registering and getting addicted to sharing awesome pictures.

The app saw accelerated growth in Japan, Germany, France, and Indonesia. The social media company also shared 80% of its traffic come from outside of the United States. It has more than doubled since 2014 and it was only in November 2014, Instagram saw 400 million users. Rapidly accelerated growth anyone? 500 million registered users is impressive, but the only number that really matters is the 300 million who regularly use the social media app.

A slowdown or a matter of quantity?

It’s not all roses for Californian company, it also saw a slow down in images posted by users. Currently at 500 million users, it sees 90 million pictures posted per day.  At 400 million users there were 80 million posts a day. This could be the effect of Snapchat, offering users the ability to share videos and photos as well, albeit in temporary status.

The social media app has seen rapid growth since being bought by Facebook in 2012 for $1bn (£677m). It has even surpassed Twitter in terms of registered users, with Twitter seemingly peaking at over 300 million users.

It seems the recent face lift Instagram received earlier in the month has not deterred new users despite backlash from long term users. The allure of being a social media phenomenon seems to also transcend language and culture.
