Huawei Nova and Nova+ pack plenty of power

The Huawei Nova and Nova+ are two smartphones with the minerals to last you through two days on a single charge, with both boasting massive battery capacities.

After launching the impressive P9 earlier in the year, Huawei are back with a new line of devices, the Nova and Nova+. When both devices were at the rumour stage, there was talks of the Nova line being aimed squarely at women. The rumour started from a Weibo post and was probably a product of ‘lost in translation.’ What we do know is Huawei are playing to their strengths with the Nova series, making impressive cheap mid-range phones.

First up is the Nova, it’s the smaller of the two with a 5-inch 1080p panel. The Honor 8 seemed to have inspired the Nova, as has a metal frame and curved glass body. The 3D fingerprint scanner we saw on the Honor 8 is on the back, 3GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 625 powers it.

The only feature worth shouting about with the Nova is the massive 3,020mAh battery. For a mid-range device, a battery surpassing 3,000mAh is a big deal. It offers more juice than the Samsung Galaxy S7 and LG G5.

USB-C is fast infecting all Huawei smartphones, the Nova being the most recent to adopt it. On the snapper side you’re getting a 12-megapixel main shooter, with a f/2.2 aperture. The selfie camera is 8-megapixels, with f/2.0 aperture. On paper the Nova should perform well in low-light photography.

Huawei Nova’s plus sized brother: Nova +

The Nova+ has few differences, most notably is the improved 16-megapixel camera. Of course megapixels aren’t everything, it also has optical image stabilisation, making it even better for low-light shots. Being plus sized, it’s also bigger with a 5.5-inch screen (still 1080p), with a 3,340mAh in tow. According to Huawei, the Nova and Nova+ will last you a weirdly specific 2.2 days in battery life.

With the specs being decent, let’s hope Huawei keep the price at a decent level as well. An official UK price has not been confirmed but the Nova will retail in Europe at ‚¬399 (£335), and the Nova Plus at ‚¬429 (£360).

Both devices will be made available to 50 countries in October, a concrete release date is being waited on.
