HTC may be in a spot of financial trouble right now, but it isn’t stopping the company from experimenting with new devices, and we don’t mean smartphones. HTC bosses Peter Chou and Cher Wang have commented on the possibility of new smartwatches and tablets from the company, and it’s sounding positive.
First up, the smartwatch. Speaking to the Financial Times, CEO Chou said that such a device “has to meet a need, otherwise if it’s just a gimmick or concept.” According to Chou, current smartwatches aren’t finding a place in people’s every day lives, and the company won’t be releasing its own version until they find something that meets consumer needs. That should mean no gimmicky early models, Chou hopes.
Then there’s tablets. The company hasn’t been in the market since 2011 where it had the Flyer and Jetstream devices. Now its rumoured to have a new device in the works, which Wang seems positive about. “When the tablet comes out it will be something nice and disruptive,” he told the outlet. The HTC bosses seem pretty chirpy on both subjects, then.
Given current rumours of an Amazon smartphone partnership also in the works, it certainly is an interesting time for the company. Will 2014 see them return back to fruition?
