Following complaints from users about the removal of the offline maps function from the latest version of Googlemaps, the company have released a new update that allows users to more easily save maps of local areas to their handset. With this new update users can download a map at a wifi hotspot and avoid having to rely on their mobile data allowance to keep checking their directions.

Google responded to criticism of the missing feature with a statement that they were rushing to complete a “Make this map area available offline” function to provide a similar service to the old version.

Despite Google’s quick response, the update does not mark a complete return to the old offline maps functionality, with the original feature allowing users to cache a range of locations and explore larger areas.
