Rumours that Samsung have been working on an online smartwatch got a boost to their credibility when a trademark filing for the name ‘Gear’ was released last week, hinting that Samsung may have settled on a name.

The filing specified that ‘Samsung Gear’ can be applied to a variety of products and the first mentioned in the document are ‘parts and fittings for watches; wristwatches; electronic clocks and watches; bracelets; watchbands; control clocks’ as well as ‘watches that communicate data to personal digital assistants.’

In March, Samsung’s executive vice president of mobile business, Lee Young-hee, said of their plans to produce a smartwatch device, “We are working very hard to get ready for it. We are preparing products for the future, and the watch is definitely one of them.”

We reached out to Samsung’s PR firm for any information on whether or not they can confirm smartwatch plans for the new trademark but so far they are keeping quiet on the topic.
