EE has confirmed they will not be relaunching the scheme after several cases of overheating incidents.

Speaking to Mobile News, EE said while they’re not relaunching the Power Bars rewards scheme, a new rewards scheme will be launched this summer. The Power Bar scheme saw immense popularity with EE customers, with EE running out of stock in under 24 hours.

But three months into the scheme the operator was forced to recall around 500,000 Power Bars after stories of one exploding made headlines.

Medical student Katy Emslie posted a picture (below) on Twitter after claiming her Power Bar exploded in her hand, while others reported issues with overheating.

The Power Bars scheme proved to popular with customers, peaking at 1.5 million Power Bars in circulation. Each Power Bar provided 2600 mAh of power for EE customers to charge their device on-the-go, which can be swapped for a fully charged one once empty.

EE recalled all 1.5 million Power Bars in return for a £20 voucher. The voucher scheme ended in March.

An EE spokesperson said: “our EE Power Bar promotion had a hugely positive response from our customers, however after careful consideration we’ve decided not to bring it back. We still sell a wide range of chargers and power packs to keep our customer connected. We’ll share news shortly about ways to stay connected at Glastonbury and the summer festival season, as well as some exciting new loyalty offers throughout the summer.”

EE did not reveal any more information on the new schemes.
