Motorola’s website crashed today as it strained to cope with an influx of visits from shoppers on the hunt for discounted mobile phones.

The US manufacturer alerted customers to the issue about an hour ago as US consumer logged on to make the most of Cyber Monday deals.

Cyber Monday, typically the first Monday in December, follows Black Friday and similarly marks the start of the Christmas shopping season. It is the day when online shopping spend peaks, giving retailers the opportunity to attract consumers with one-day deals.

Motorola announced last week that it would be offering its Moto X handset SIM free at a discount of $150 ( £92), at $349 ( £213) throughout Cyber Monday.

However, after crashing a few hours ago it is currently working to restore online services, and has said “Cyber Monday deal prices won’t begin until all systems are go”.
