We all know that Samsung and Apple dominate the mobile market. We also know that they make money. A lot of money. But exactly how much is ‘a lot’?

It turns out that the answer is 108% of the money. Yep, you read that right. Samsung and Apple take all of the profits in the market – literally every other manufacturer either breaks even or loses money. Add on that disparity between breaking even and the negative state of returns that many companies find themselves in and there you have it.

Smartphone profitability share by company

Apple takes home roughly 68% of all of the profits going, whilst Samsung nabs the other 40%. HTC and BlackBerry just about break even, Motorola finishes just shy of profitability, and the less said about poor old Nokia the better.

This information is visualised in a chart provided by Canaccord Genuity, a Canadian Investment Bank. They even released the same chart this time last quarter, with the results looking largely the same, with Apple and Samsung taking 104% of the profits. The mind boggles.
