Apple won’t build a cheap iPhone, Cook doesn’t ‘slit wrists’ over stock prices

Well there you have it, Apple will not be building a cheap iPhone anytime soon. According to Tim Cook, the company’s “primary objective is to sell a great phone and provide a great experience.”

When Bloomberg Businessweek asked about a cheap iPhone, Cook said that the company has “never had an objective to sell a low cost phone,” and that that “there’s always a large junk part of the market” that Apple doesn’t want to be in.

This may disappoint many of you who had expected Apple to release a cheap iPhone this time round, instead of the still premium but slightly cheaper iPhone 5c. It shouldn’t come as a surprise though, with the company’s senior vice president of worldwide marketing Phil Schiller saying as much in the past.

Cook didn’t seem too bothered that the inexistence of a cheaper iPhone is affecting its share prices either, with the CEO saying “I don’t feel euphoric on the up, and I don’t slit my wrists when it goes down.”

Apple’s new iPhones may be finding their way into emerging markets, with this the first iPhone to find its way onto the world’s largest carrier, China Mobile. Despite the two company’s not officially having an agreement until recently, China Mobile supposedly has over 42 million iPhone users using its network — even though they can’t access the 3G network.
