Apple buys GPS company Coherent Navigation

Apple has confirmed the acquisition of super-accurate GPS company Coherent Navigations, with its CEO and co-founders taking positions within the Maps and wireless technologies teams.

The company specialises in accurate GPS naviation and combines traditional GPS positioning with information from Iridium’s low orbit communication satellites. This allows the system to track a persons position within inches of their location, rather than feet.

Having dissolved the company into their mapping and wireless technologies teams, it is unclear how the company will be used. Apple are being usually coy on the subject and refusing to comment on the acquisition, so don’t expect news any time soon.
