The Financial Times reported today that sources within Apple have revealed that the technology giant is bringing new talent on board to work on the iWatch project; a digital smartwatch that has been rumoured to be in development for some time.
Apple recently patented battery technology that may be linked to the project as well as attempting to copyright the name ‘iWatch, but sources within Apple have claimed that this doesn’t make the iWatch’s release inevitable. In the past Apple have pursued projects at great length only to scrap them before release.
The hiring spree is likely fueled by Apple’s move into a completely new type of product category. The move from iPads, iPhones and iPods into wearable technology has created engineering problems that Apple are struggling to solve with their in-house talent, forcing them to bring new engineers into the company.
The Financial Times claimed that Apple insiders suggested that a 2014 release date for any iWatch is realistic, while a budget version of the iPhone might be on the horizon for a release later this year. Apple haven’t officially confirmed or denied the rumours that their latest hiring spree is connected to a smartwatch project.
