Amazon phone could be built by HTC

Amazon has enjoyed a lot of success with its Kindle tablet line, but the company is yet to move into phone handsets. We recently heard rumours that such a device could use a 3D display, and now reports are coming in that HTC could be building the Amazon phone.

The Financial Times has been told by anonymous sources that the Taiwanese manufacturer has been contracted to make the new handset, codenamed Smith. If true, then there’s another phone in development that’s codenamed Project B. There could even be a third phone in development, though it’s Smith (we like that name already) that’s taking priority right now.

Interestingly, this type of business used to be what HTC specialised in. The company used to make phones for the likes of T-Mobile and O2, who would then rebrand the phones and sell them as their own. Given that the company is in a bit of a pickle with recent sales results, is this a sign of them returning to familiar territory?

We probably won’t hearing anything official on the Amazon phone for a little while longer. It’s reassuring to hear a quality brand might be behind it, though.
