Amazon will hold a rare press conference in New York next week, on 2 April, amid intense speculation that it will reveal a streaming device that rivals the Apple TV and Google Chromecast.
Peter Larsen, Vice President of the company’s Kindle division, will provide an update on Amazon’s video business at the event, Amazon said on Thursday.
Speculation has been high that Amazon is close to revealing a streaming device – a set-top box or connecting “dongle” – that can pipe video into the living room.
Sources close to the project claim that it will also support streaming for full PC game titles, making it a rival to the Xbox, Playstation and Steam, instead of just Android-powered consoles.
The titles, which are said to be top-tier PC games, will be streamed from Amazon’s services at 30fps (which is comparable to most online video), according to another source that spoke to TechCrunch recently.
Amazon’s set-top box / dongle would compete with devices made by Apple, Google and U.S. television start-up Roku.
