Amazon is opening a bookstore

Amazon has opened its first bookstore in the United States, signalling a move into physical commerce at last.

Amazon has been talking about venturing into physical shop-floor space for a while now, though I don’t think anybody envisioned them to start with a bookstore. The new shop, called Amazon Books, has opened in the University Village area of Seattle, Washington and will offer the benefit of stocking readily accessible reading material for the local students nearby.

Stock will be chosen based on customer ratings and feedback from the Amazon website, meaning you’ll get the best and most popular titles in-store. Of course, this isn’t just an opportunity for students to buy books. Amazon is also using the opportunity to offer customers a place to try their latest hardware, including the Kindle and Fire products.

Amazon penned a letter to customers outlining their hopes for what the store will bring, saying that it’s a “physical extension of Amazon.com”, bringing “20 years of online bookselling experience”.

If you’re one of our American readers, the store is located at 4601 26th Ave. NE in University Village. Opening times are Monday to Saturday from 9:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. and on Sundays from 11:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
