Mobile gaming is an industry that only keeps getting bigger. Games act as a perfect companion for those stressful morning commutes or short journeys. However, with the wealth of titles on offer it can be a little daunting to separate the good from the bad.
We’re bringing back the top 5! Here’s our pick of the five best smartphone games this week!
Fear the Walking Dead: Dead Run – Tactical Runner (iOS only)
Price: Free
While the title is a bit of a mouthful, the game is surprisingly simple. Controlling a player from the show, you’re thrown into the world of the TV show with undead chasing you at every opportunity. Yes, it’s another runner title but it doesn’t just feel like a simple cash cow. The action is broken up by various different modes; sometimes you’ll be running sideways and other times the game will take a POV spin where you’re in the eyes of the player as he dashes through the hordes.
Spellspire (iOS only)
Price: Free
On paper, Spellspire sounds a bit of a disaster. Using the power of vocabulary to conquer an RPG is hardly inspiring, yet somehow the game manages make it more fun than ever. Controlling a wizard, you need to create words in order to defeat enemies. The better the word, the more powerful the attack. This is blended in with more traditional RPG elements such as managing items, defeating bosses and traversing the world. All-in-all, a very fun and original take on the traditional RPG formula.
Disney Crossy Road (Android and iOS)
Price: Free
Crossy Road is already a pretty fun and popular title, so why mess with the classic? Well, that’s exactly what Disney thought when they collaborated to make Disney Crossy Road. It’s essentially the same game but with Disney characters that offer subtle gameplay tweaks to an already brilliant formula. With over a hundred characters at launch, players should have plenty to choose from as they pick from franchises such as Big Hero and Toy Story. The only disappointment is a lack of Star Wars, but there’s no reason why they can’t release this later as an additional pack.
Warbits (iOS only)
Price: £2.29
If you’ve ever played the Game Boy game Advance Wars, you’ll feel right at home with Warbits. It feels like a more modern version of the classic handheld predecessor, with the basic gameplay being largely the same. Conquering cities and waging war with the enemy in a turn-based grid environment is the order of the day. By gaining cities you’ll also get income, which can be used to buy better units and ultimately overthrow the enemy.
Go Surf – The Endless Wave (iOS only)
Price: £2.29
Go Surf is a simple endless runner title that takes place on the waves. With a gorgeous minimal art style that takes homage from some of the pretties titles currently out there, you’ll be captivated just as much by the visuals as the gameplay. Time those taps to jump over and avoid traps, while also avoiding crowds who attempt to get in your way. A dynamic day and night cycle keeps things interesting, forcing you to adjust your technique depending on the condition. Give it a go and try to break the record for the longest wave ever ridden!
