The Skullcandy Sesh – Available for £49.99 from Skullcandy.co.uk

Skullcandy has always created products for the 15-25 demographic and for years it felt like a brand once out of your teens you leave Skullcandy behind. However, over the last few years, they have been doing something different and keeping hold of that audience. They have a range of products that anyone past the teen years will appreciate.

In this review, we are covering the Skullcandy Shesh true wireless earbuds. These buds fall into the budget sector of the market at £49.99 and come in 3 colours – Black, Blue & Red.

In this review, I have been given the Black pair to review. Packaging wise its very smart looking box with a picture of the buds and the 3 key features of this device:

  • Bluetooth connectivity
  • 10 hours Battery
  • IP55 rated

Open the flap of the box and you are given first time pairing instructions and basic user guide of how to use the buds.

Inside the box you have the buds, charging case and Micro-USB Cable & 2 spare pairs of ear tips (Small & Large Pairs)

The design of these buds look really good with especially with the Skullcandy logo on the buds. They sit nicely in my ears and sit flush in my ears and create an impressive level of passive sound isolation which is important when we can all travel to work again after this virus has left the building.

The charge case is quite big in fact its twice the size of the charge case of my Jabra Elite 75t.

However, this case is still designed very well the lid is easy to open and with the magnets inside the case, it holds the buds in so if I was to pop them in my bag I would not have to worry about them dropping out of the case. The charge case is made of plastic but its hardly a shock considering the cost. However, it’s still a decent case that comes with the branding on the front and the button that indicates how many charges you have in the case(Max 4 Charges).

Moving back to the earbuds they are IP55 rated meaning they are water/sweat resistant this means these buds are ideal for hitting the gym and will also be safe if it happens to be raining on your commute to work. These buds are connected via Bluetooth 5.0 which is very common in most new products and the Bluetooth was effective it gave me a range of over 1200 ft.

Control-wise these buds have the following controls via the buttons on the buds:

  • Volume increase- Press right bud button x2
  • Volume decrease- Press left bud button x2
  • skip track- hold right bud for 2 secs.
  • Go back a track – Hold left bud for 2 secs.
  • Activate smart assistant- tap button x3
  • Play/Pause – Tap the button once

Sound-wise the general pubic will find these quite nice to listen to as you get clear low end meaning you get a rich sound and if the bass is your bag the Skullcandy Sesh gives you the right amount of bass. However, the vocals at times seemed a little quiet and I did try a number of different songs but it did seem to be the case though out testing but for the average user its no deal-breaker. All of these elements combined plus with a good earbud fit which creates passive sound isolation all combine to create an overall good sound.

Moving onto the battery life and this is where the budget price makes a little sense you get 10 hours tops and that 3 playtime in the buds and a further 7 hours from the charging case. Now if your travel to work is an hour then its not that bad and you will have to charge over a few days. However, In this current lockdown (Coronavirus) I have used these for several hours and it’s not ideal compared to a pair of Jabra Elite 75t that offers 28 hours of battery life but you are paying £169 compared to the Skullcandy Sesh at £49.99. I found this interesting as when you compare the charge cases the Skullcandy case is double the size of the Jabra pair. So why only 10 hours of charge in total for the Skullcandy Sesh?

Overall, The Skullcandy Sesh I feel are a real mixed bag the sound quality is decent for a budget pair of buds. The design of the buds look good and the fit offers that passive sound isolation for a very good sound. The buds also have IP55 rating meaning a trip to the gym or dancing in the rain they will be fine.

However, its the battery life that really let these buds down at 10 hours max including the charge case it’s just not good enough compared to other buds in the price range or compared to my favourite buds the Jabra Elite 75t. Now if you are only using these buds in short periods and keep the charging case full then you won’t find the battery bad but I like to have a charge case and buds to give me longer playtime.
