The Moto G series seems to be its most popular line in the recent history of the brand. While Lenovo seems to have finally landed on a brand name in Motorola, they have also come up with the latest in that range, with three devices, the G6, G6 Plus and the G6 Play. In the case of the G6 and G6 Plus, the two devices contain very similar specs, in this instance, we have been testing the 5.9 inch G6 Plus and were pleasantly surprised at the result. While the success is yet to be determined, once again Lenovo and Motorola seem to be undercutting the premium brands with features seen only on flagships and the recently launched Honor 7A and 7C. Facial recognition, fingerprint reader and dual camera top the list of treats. The 5.9 inch full HD screen is superb. Another star of this show is the dual camera set up at the back with a 12MP and 5MP set up. Four main shooting modes alongside panorama are face filter mode, portrait mode (that focuses on a subject and blurs the background), a group selfie mode for when you have too many friends and a spot colour mode that takes one colour and generates the rest of the image in black and white.

Manufacture View

Packed with features and premium functionality, the new Moto G 6 family is designed with the consumer in mind, offering exceptional value. Five years ago, Motorola set out to address a gap in the market: quality smartphones that could do great things – at a price that even more people could afford. “The first Moto G became the bestselling smartphone in Motorola history. We have continued to push the boundaries of the value equation even further with the debut of the Moto G, a smartphone that was fully loaded and fairly priced. The Moto G and moto e product families offer the perfect combinations of features for consumers who don’t want to compromise on quality, style or experience. This year the legacy continues with the newest generation of the Moto G family. The new Moto G 6 family devices are smarter than ever and focus on display, design and power. They have the speed and power of Qualcomm Snapdragon processors and run Android 8.0 Oreo. They have great Moto experiences that unlock AI opportunities.”

Our Review

premium features like facial recognition and fancy camera modes are no longer restricted to the price point comparable to a season ticket at the Emirates and the Moto G6 Plus ticks all those boxes. FullHD and 4K screens are all well and good but not vital. Camera modes are great for the pros but the amateurs aren’t going to bother with the details and the bragging right of facial recognition is quickly becoming so last year. Using the G6 Plus is quick and easy. It’s obviously not the power handset that can be found at higher price points but the only slow down in performance we saw was during the set up when up to 30 applications were downloading at once. Small games are easy to play and the device is able to withstand bigger titles with lots going. The camera is the best part of the device for me. As an amateur photographer, I was able to fiddle around and get a few great shots with the spot colour mode. Remembering that this particular model is less than £300, you get a very capable phone on the worlds most popular operating system, facial recognition, fingerprint reader and the Moto UI that allows the consumer to use all sorts of gestures, I’d ask, why pay more?
