The start of the 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup is being celebrated on the Google homepage with a doodle showing female players in several poses.

This is the seventh official Women’s World Cup tournament and is being hosted in Canada. A total of 24 teams are playing this year, an eight team increase from the 16 who played in 2011.

England, who are playing in Group F, will be competing against France, Colombia and Mexico. Japan were crowned champions for the first time in 2011 after they beat the USA in a penalty shootout.

FIFA Women’s World Cup

The first official FIFA Women’s World Cup event took place in 1991 in China, but the first unofficial Women’s World Cup took place in 1970 with the Coppa del Mondo in Italy.

This year’s final will be held on Sunday July 5 in Vancouver.
