Apple has announced a voluntary recall of 220,000 Beats Pill XL speakers following a report of one user claiming to have suffered burns from the device.
The report, alongside eight other reports of overheating, has ignited fears that the battery pack of affected units may overheat and catch fire and the company is offering customers a £215 refund for the device.
The Pill XL was unveiled in 2013 before Apple officially purchased Beats in May 2014. It’s named after its distinctive shape, features a ‘b’ logo in the centre of the speaker grill and is available in black, metallic sky, pink, titanium and white colours.
With a Bluetooth range of 30-metres, it also boasts a rechargeable battery that lasts 15-hours and a built-in speaker phone for taking calls. You can also charge a mobile device with it.
The recall announcement reads: “Apple today announced a voluntary recall of Beats Pill XL speakers, including a refund for customers. Apple has determined that, in rare cases, the battery in the Beats Pill XL may overheat and pose a fire safety risk. The recall does not affect any other Beats or Apple products.
“Because customer safety is the company’s top priority, Apple is asking customers to stop using their Beats Pill XL speakers.”
If you’re returning the product, you’re eligible for an Apple Store credit or electronic payment of £215, despite the product being officially retailed at £269.
