With Windows Phone 8 on the way and new Nokia Lumia Windows Phones to follow, new statistics show that Windows Phone use has increased throughout Europe, with the UK showing 17.6 per cent growth.

Microsoft’s Windows Phone operating system has long been praised by critics and users alike for its intuitive usability, handy features and great looks, but the OS has still struggled to match Android and iOS in sales.

Windows Phone 8 may change that when it is released towards the end of 2012 but for now it seems that the current Windows Phone 7 OS is gaining ground across Europe, if these recent figures are anything to go by.

According to statistics from StatCounter, Windows Phone use grew by 17.6 per cent in the UK from June to July 2012, while uptake in France grew by 29.8 per cent during the same period.

Germany was close behind with 27.3 per cent growth, but it was Italy that saw the biggest increase in Windows Phone use, growing by a whopping 66 per cent over the past two months.

While Windows Phone still occupies a very small portion of the smartphone OS market compared to Android and iOS, these figures are encouraging for fans of Microsoft’s often unsung operating system.

And with Windows Phone 8 set to add even more great features to the operating system, only time will tell if Microsoft and partners such as Nokia can push the OS to become a viable rival to the market leaders.

What do you think of Windows Phone? Is it one of the best mobile OS’s or just a flash in the pan that can’t compare to Google Android or Apple iOS? Tell us your thoughts in the comments below.
