Fledgling British manufacturer Wileyfox are back with another budget handset range, with the Wileyfox Spark X being the phablet choice for screen real estate fans.

Unveiled by passionate co-founder Nick Muir, the new Spark range doesn’t knock it out of the park in the specs department, nor did we expect it to. Today Wileyfox announced the Spark, Spark X and Spark+. Three budget devices that offer 4G and Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow for a ridiculously low price point.

The Wileyfox Spark X sees an upgrade from its little brothers in terms of size, measuring in with a 5.5-inch, 720p display. The same display we saw on the Swift and Storm last year. Nick Muir quipped “you should know us for our HD screen by now.” The Spark X is the biggest of the three, which sees a bump to 16GB of internal memory, and 2GB of RAM.

Powering the show is a Mediatek MT6735 SoC with a 1.3GHz quad-core CPU. On the snapper front there is an 8-megapixel front-facing camera, accompanied by a 13-megapixels for the rear-facing shooter, which also differentiates the Wileyfox Spark X from the others.

No Android Pay

There is a glaring omission from the new Wileyfox range and that is NFC. Without NFC the Spark devices will not be able to take advantage of Android Pay. Android Pay became available recently in the UK providing quick and seamless payments for purchases and travel.

Co-founder Nick Muir states aggressive pricing to be the reason for the lack of NFC. Muir admits Android Pay as accelerated quickly in the UK and Wileyfox will adopt the technology one day, but not with the Spark range.

Pre-orders for the Spark range can be made today through the official website. Ordering from Amazon will land you a free protective case as well as free screen replacement insurance valid for one year. The Spark X will retail for £129.99/‚¬169.99, with a release in August.
