Being a verified celebrity on Twitter can be hard work. Even if you’re not one yourself it’s not all that hard to imagine – hell, you’ve probably already seen it before.
Under every tweet from big celebrities the @replies are usually a torrent of unrelated abuse. It’s sad, but something there’s not really anyway of addressing. Of course the user in question could just block the trolls, but when you’ve got literally millions of people tweeting at you on a daily basis that’s not always a practical solution.
Fortunately, Twitter has decided to intervene with a new technology called ‘quality filtering’. To quote Twitter on it: “Quality filtering aims to remove all Tweets from your notifications timeline that contain threats, offensive or abusive language, duplicate content, or are sent from suspicious accounts.”
In other words it shuts out spam, bot accounts and jerks, in theory at least.
Verified users can dip into their app settings and enable it right now. It is only available for iOS users though – Android and Windows celebs may have to wait a while.
There’s no guaranteeing it’ll work 100% of the time, but for those with follower counts in the six or seven digit range it could be a real boost. And for those accounts that are actually ran by the celebs themselves rather than their respective PR teams it could make interacting with genuine fans a lot easier.
