Canonical is hoping to take on the world on smartphone operating systems through its Ubuntu Touch OS, and it’s finally set a release date — October 17. What’s more is that you can download Ubuntu Touch on compatible Android phones completely free, meaning you won’t have to go and buy another phone.

Ubuntu Touch was meant to be shown off using the powerful Ubuntu Edge smartphone, but when it missed its goal we had to settle for just the operating system, rather than the killer hardware.

Developers and users who wanted to take the plunge have already been able to use the Ubuntu Touch operating system on their Samsung Galaxy Nexus and Nexus 4 smartphones, as well as the Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 tablets — but it was only a preview.

It’s not yet known if other non-stock devices will be able to install the Ubuntu Touch operating system, and it’s likely that you’re going to have to have an unlocked bootloader in order to do so.

If you want a completely new phone made for Ubuntu Touch, then you’re going to have to wait a little longer, with the first devices not expected until late 2013 or early 2014.
