Symbian and MeeGo will officially die at the end of 2013

If you’re still holding onto Nokia’s former smartphone operating systems, then you might want to move on as Symbian and MeeGo are about to become a thing of the past, with Nokia killing app support for the two platforms from January 1 2014.

Whilst you will still be able to use the platforms, and Nokia has outsourced development of Symbian to Accenture until 2016, the app store known as Nokia Store will stop accepting submissions — meaning if you’re a developer working on a Symbian or MeeGo app, then you may want to be ready by year’s end.  Symbian and MeeGo users will also find themselves without app updates, as Nokia won’t be accepting submissions of any kind, even if it means fixing a security flaw in your app.

The Nokia Developer Team has said the reason for the imminent shutdown is so that the company can focus on its Asha and Windows Phone lineup and not have to worry about products it no longer makes.

Symbian users can still hold out hope that they will get updates thanks to the company’s agreement with Accenture, but if you’re still using Symbian then it’s a sad day for you, as this is sure to be the final nail in the coffin for the already dead OS.
