The PlayStation 4 and Xbox One may be stealing all the thunder when it comes to next-generation consoles, but it’s hard to forget that Valve has its own aspirations – after all it might pave the way for the game we’ve all been waiting for, Half-Life 3. If we were to speculate, then Valve is having some fun teasing prospective buyers of the console naming the prototypes of the Steam Box “Gordon” and “Freeman”, which any Half-Life fan would know is the name of the main character.
The pictures of the two prototypes appeared on Engadget courtesy of iBuyPower, and we have to admit the design resembles that of the PlayStation 4, albeit in white, and with strip of light glowing many different colours rather than the PS4’s blue. It’s also slightly less angular, but let’s face it – this is essentially a PS4.
One place the Steam Box may trump the PS4 and Xbox One however is its internals, with the monster that is the Nvidia Titan GeForce GTX 780, GTX 760 and GTX 660 GPUs all tipped to be included. The rumours also speculate that there will be an AMD CPU with a discrete GPU, WiFi, Bluetooth and at least a 500GB HDD. Of course it would be nicer to have a SSD, but there’s rumours that there are plans for faster and larger options.
With the Steam Box set to be a rather niche product, it’s likely going to fetch for a rather expensive price – but as long as it comes with Half-Life 3, we’ll pay anything.
