Not only has Sony revealed its new flagship handset, the Sony Xperia Z3, but we’ve also been treated to a brand new miniature handset.

The Xperia Z1 Compact came out at the start of this year. It ended up being one of our best-reviewed devices ever. We were spared its followup, the Sony Xperia A2, as it ended up only being released in Asian markets. It’s with great excitement, then, that we reveal to you the Sony Xperia Z3 Compact.

Just a cursory look at the Z3 Compact makes things perfectly clear: this is a flagship miniature device, not a miniature version of a flagship device. Unlike the HTC One Mini 2 or the Samsung Galaxy S5 Mini, this handset is packed to the brim with some monstrous specifications. A smart move from Sony, as powerful mini handsets seem to be something other manufacturers are afraid of. For those looking for top specs in a smaller body, this device may well be their only option.

Behind a 4.7-inch 720p display there sits a 2.5GHz Snapgragon 801 processor with 2GB of RAM. A far cry from the usual 1.2GHz models we see in so many other compacts.

Then you have the same 20.7MP Sony lens found on the back of so many of its other flagship devices. It may not be all that new, but it’s still one of the best going.

There’s also a sizeable 2,600mAh battery, and of course 4G LTE compatibility. Its 16GB of onboard storage can be expanded via microSD card, too. It’s also pretty light at 129g, despite all of its top-of-the-line internals. What’s more, it’s fully waterproof, just like its big brother.

With the launch of the Xperia Z1, we saw what was the first real Android handset which could appeal to iPhone users. With the launch of the iPhone 6 looming, Sony may have just done it again.
