Sony will separate its semiconductors operations improve and grow image sensors, which have contributed to growth for the Japanese electronics maker.

The majority of smartphones use Sony’s image sensing technology and with Sony’s decision to do this could spell more improvements to their already top performing sensors. The iPhone 6S sports a Sony image sensor and has contributed to the company’s recent success.

Sony recently focused on splitting off under-performing units, but by splitting off image sensors will help it remain competitive as more control will mean more efficiency. The newly spun off semiconductors operations will be rebranded as Sony Semiconductors Solutions.

Sony committed to investing 45 billion yen ($374 billion) into sensor production capacity, on top of a commitment of 105 billion in February.
