Sony has revealed the first phone in the Xperia NXT series – the Xperia S. Packing NFC and HDMI features, Sony has reaffirmed its commitment to leading the way in camera phones with a 12 megapixel Exmor R camera and a HD Reality Display based screen to view 1080p video. Sony boast that images can be captured in 1.5 seconds from standby too.

As well as having access to the Sony Entertainment Network, the Xperia S – like the Xperia Play – has full access to the PlayStation Store. Upping the standard memory of a smartphone, Sony has gone for a 32GB storage option rather than the traditional 16GB which is a clear sign that the new phones of 2012 will feature more storage, better cameras and more connectivity as manufacturers race to further integrate Android with Smart TVs.

The new Xperia design is also matched by a range of accessories including a Smart Wireless Headset which allows you to see incoming calls before you accept them and manage calendars in an attempt to offer increased voice functions after the debut of Siri on iPhone 4S. The surprise accessory is the SmartWatch, which connects with the Xperia S and provides text, call and social media access.

The Xperia S is set for launch before the end of March in the UK and no pricing details have been announced. The bundled OS is Android 2.3 Gingerbread although an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich upgrade will be available before the end of June, according to Sony.
