Samsung patent suggests Google Glass rival on the way

This probably isn’t going to surprise anyone, but a recent Samsung patent has suggested that the Korean company is developing a Google Glass competitor.

It would seem that the form factor is where the similarities end for this and Google’s offering, though. The Samsung patent shows the glasses to be tethered using a micro-USB connection. We goes this would mean you’d be plugging them actually into a smartphone, possible to bring up the OS on your glasses. Sounds a little bit clunkier than Google’s self-contained Android device.

This does however mean that the glasses might be powered by the smartphone itself. That could benefit the aesthetics of the design in a number of different ways. It could also mean that, somehow, the device is already compatible with a number of apps, while Glassware, Google’s Glass apps, are built from the ground up.

There are also built-in earbuds in the frame for audio. That paves the way for the likes of music on your device, which isn’t possible with the current iteration of Glass. All this said, Samsung’s last attempt at a new form factor in the Galaxy Gear didn’t go so well, as it was clunky and overly dependent on the Note 3 phablet.

Let’s wait to see how this one turns out before we all get excited, right?
