Samsung has announced an update to its CMOS image sensors, named ISOCELL. The new sensor features greatly improved light sensitivity as well as higher colour fidelity. The company has achieved this through improved control of electron absorption.
This is important as its likely that we’ll be seeing this sensor incorporated into Samsung’s upcoming round of smartphones and tablets, including the (currently unannounced) Galaxy S5. It will help to improve the cameras on its upcoming devices without troubling their size. An image showing the camera’s improvements can be seen below.
Right now the tech has already been implemented into one sensor, using the model number S5K4H5YB. That’s an 8MP camera with 1.12ü ISOCELL pixel size. Given that the S4 sported a 13MP camera, don’t expect this to be the model that makes it into the improved S5. This particular model will be starting production in Q4 2013.
